Clay Care Guide
Taking care of your earthen products is simple but essential. Follow these traditional steps to ensure your clay pieces last a lifetime.
How to Season Before First Use
- Step 1: Submerge the new clay pot completely in plain water for 12 to 24 hours.
- Step 2: Remove it from the water and let it dry completely under the sun or in a well-ventilated area.
- Step 3: Once completely dry, rub a generous amount of cooking oil (like mustard, coconut, or olive oil) on the inside and outside of the pot.
- Step 4: Heat the oiled pot on a low flame for about 5 minutes or bake it in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes. Let it cool naturally.
Your clay pot is now seasoned, strengthened, and ready to use!
Everyday Cooking Tips
- Always start cooking on a low flame and gradually increase the heat. Sudden temperature changes can cause the clay to crack.
- Use wooden or silicone spatulas. Metal spoons can scrape the porous clay surface.
- Never pour cold water into a hot clay pot. Allow it to cool down naturally before washing.
Cleaning & Maintenance
- No Soap: Clay is porous and will absorb soap, which will leach into your food during your next meal. Use warm water and a soft brush.
- Deep Cleaning: For stubborn stains or burnt food, soak the pot in warm water with a tablespoon of baking soda or rock salt for 10 minutes, then scrub gently.
- Drying: Ensure the pot is completely dry before storing it in a well-ventilated cabinet. Storing a damp pot can lead to mold.
